El proyecto 'Árboles Urbanos' consiste en dispositivos técnicos interactivos que invitan a los usuarios de la plaza a generar energía eléctrica para iluminar y regar la plaza 'pedaleando' en el árbol. A partir de aquí, proponen dos principios fundamentales para las intervenciones de diseño: primero, la necesidad de alejarse de estrategias de 'nudging' de los ususarios, hacia itervenciones que requieren el 'cuidado' de los usuarios. In recent years, the notion of smartness has gained pervasive prominence in various spheres of social life and the ways that cities can be known, planned and governed. Data collection is now enabled through embedded sensors and devices in urban space, particularly in the development of the Internet of Things. Autonomous mobility and other smart city initiatives make cities appear to be manageable and controllable in (near) real-time through smart analytics and dashboards. In developing these innovations, new modes of laboratorization and experimentation are deployed in order to test technological ‘solutions’. Against the grain of a sterile technotopia proposed by the smart city, we want to problematize the various kinds of smartness that are programmed and inscribed into this debate, as well as question the newness of it. What, in other words, are the failures and breakdowns that slow down and counteract the supposed smoothness of the smart city? Through a one-day workshop we invite researchers to creatively incorporate the “murmur of the idiot” (Stengers, 2005) into situations in which new relationships with our ‘smart’ surroundings can be built.

During the event, each presenter discusses an idiotic object or situation. Each speaker, together with the audience, will then try to further the idiocy of other speakers cases.

About Circling the Square…
Urban planners, architects and designers are increasingly confronted with highly complex socio-ecological dynamics and challenges. These do not just involve new levels of vulnerability caused by heat island effect and anthropogenic climate change. Cities have also become refugiums for many species which flee habitat loss, agrochemicals and monoculture deserts, while globalized “invasive” species are showing the limits of techno-scientific control in more and more frequently destabilizing urban green infrastructures.

Public squares and parks play a central role in current efforts to meet these socioecological challenges. However, our imaginations of what squares should be, our analytical models of their uses and functions, are still profoundly anchored in modern conceptions and divides between nature and culture, the technical and the social, the urban and the rural, the public and the private: technological infrastructures are to be held invisible, “nature” has to be ornamental and provide ecological services, public life should not be dirtied with traces of productive activities, etc.

In the workshop, we would like to initiate a conversation with architects, designers and social scientists interested in circling the square, in sharing projects, experiences and reflections on how to attempt what seems impossible: to reimagine the public squares of our cities beyond the modern constitution and explore alternative conceptualizations of urban squares and/or approaches to designing within socio- ecological assemblages.

We welcome contributions that in one way or another relate to the following issues, although we are open and interested in other lines of reflection:

As its first-ever summer course, ON MEDIATION (AGI, University of Barcelona) presents EUTOPÍAS, a theoretical-practical course exploring the relationships between contemporary art and utopia. Based on experiential research, EUTOPÍAS takes place over four days of living together in the Nectar farmhouse. The programme is aimed at artists, art historians, curators, and other cultural workers.

EUTOPIAS
In the book which coined the term “utopia”, Thomas More proposed a double etymology for a word that can be read in the sense of ou-topos (no place) and as eu-topos (good place). The meaning of the utopian has always moved between these two opposing poles of the impossible and the desirable. Through a historical account made up of various case studies, the EUTOPÍAS course will explore the meaning of this dichotomy within art, focusing on production since the 1990s. Using the utopian as a watchtower from which to observe the world in a critical way, we will see how utopia functions as a theoretical tool for better understanding our societies.

The theoretical sessions in the mornings are complemented by practical workshops in the afternoon, given by artists and cultural managers. These will reflect on the forms of bringing the concepts “down to earth” in one’s own work. The group will investigate these questions in a place that is itself utopian. All the sessions will take place in the Nectar farmhouse, a self-sufficient rural co-working and co-living space located in the Pre-Pyrenees. In the heart of the Les Guilleries natural park, this zone is characterised by surroundings of woods, escarpments, lakes, and mountains. The subject matter and the natural environment complement each other as a mental and physical space from which to ponder other forms of living together in (an)other possible world(s). At the end of each day, a short cycle of utopian cinema will be screened.
